In any up to date web browser, we give a nice window effect. As you scroll, each section that contains a title will move over top of the background image. To take into account browsers such as Internet Explorer, we swapped out this effect for a static image.

Announcing the launch of the new website for Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation! Dakota Dunes CDC is a non-profit organization in Saskatoon that presents grants to organizations and communities to fund what they like to call “community investments” or “community initiatives”. These community investments could be anything from the Children’s Festival in Saskatoon to helping a minor hockey league fund a tournament they are putting together. All of the money that is given out is received from the Dakota Dunes Casino just outside of Saskatoon. Every year the casino give a certain percentage of what they make to the CDC which allows for the funding of all of these events and projects which make the surrounding communities even greater than they already are.

We worked with the staff at Dakota Dunes CDC to come up with a web presence that would revolve around these community investments and at the same time give anyone visiting all the information they would require in regards to the corporation background, the staff, the board members or how to apply for funding. The main goal was to keep everything simple, have all of the information required, and make sure if someone was looking for something in particular, they could find it without much trouble. While setting up this for them we took the next step as well and set them up on Facebook and Twitter to help them distribute information on all of their updates, announcements and funding investments.

If you get a chance, check out the new website and let us know what you think! Even better, let them know what you think as well!

Want to hear about something interesting I came across today? Well, listen up!

By the looks of things Facebook and Moo have teamed up to give you business cards based on your Facebook profile! Want to hear the best part? The first box is free! Follow these directions to see how it all works:

1. Login to your Facebook Profile. If you haven’t upgraded to Timeline yet, you’re going to need to do this first. To find out how that can be done, check out my other blog post Facebook Timeline? Activate It Now!

2. On your profile, click on the About section.

3. Find the Contact Info section. You should see a little business card icon directly to the right of the words Contact Info. Click on that icon.

4. Click on Print Cards.

5. It should then ask you to allow Moo.com to access your information. Once you allow for that, it should redirect you to Moo’s website. Follow their instructions and there you have it!

You now have your custom designed Facebook/Moo business cards! As I mentioned the first box is free and if I am not mistaken, you should get about 50 cards in that box. Enjoy!

Are you from Saskatchewan?

Yes? Good! I feel like this would be the perfect moment to take a look backward over my right shoulder, drawing your eyes to a poster of a man standing in a prairie field. “What’s he doing?”, you might ask. Well let me tell you! He’s pointing at you! Yes you! Why? Well, it’s because we need you! More specifically, We Wish You Were Here needs you!

Alright. What is a “We Wish You Were Here”?

Right now, it’s a website and a group of people trying to get the word out. What word is that? Easy, we want the world to know that Saskatchewan is more than a rectangular shaped, hard to pronounce province in Canada. Saskatchewan is an awesome place to live, to work, and to raise your future Saskatchewanians! (Are we Saskatchewanians? Is that what we are called?)

I’m in! What can I do?

Glad you asked! The more people involved, the more successful this will be. Right now, help get the word out! Tell your friends, share posts on Facebook, retweet on Twitter, blog about it, pretty much anything that will get more people behind the project!

Website

Address: www.wewishyouwerehere.ca

The website will have all the information you need to learn more about all of this. The main thing that you should do here, is join the mailing list. Make sure that you are kept in the loop. You aren’t going to be spammed by emails claiming that you’ve won a cruise or trying to sell you a little pill that will enlarge your… well you get the point. None of that!

Facebook

Address: www.facebook.com/wewishyouwerehere

If you are on Facebook, check out the page! While you’re there, you could pull up that comfy chair you like so much, put your feet up and like the page. Maybe you could even share a post from the page on your timeline.

Twitter

Guess what? No actual Twitter account here. What can you do on Twitter? Whenever you tweet anything related to the project just include the hashtags #wewishyouwerehere and #saskatchewan. When this all takes place, with enough people involved, these hashtags will be trending!

This is exciting! What day is it happening?

The date! When is this happening? Well, we don’t know just yet. It has been narrowed down to June of this year. The actual day hasn’t been finalized at the moment, but as soon as it is, the website, Facebook page and Twitter feed will all let you know!

That’s it!

Help get the word out about Saskatchewan! You like living here, I like living here and there has to be more than just us! Find those people! Get them involved! Now! Go!

A few people to follow on Twitter

The brains behind We Wish You Were Here

@dezguy

Writer of this post

Facebook started rolling out the new Page updates today! One of the main changes being incorporated is the cover photo. You have probably seen this on regular user profiles over the last little while, so it’s not necessarily new to Facebook. Before you publish your Page, and give it a cover photo there are a few things you should know! Fairly important things!

Cover photos cannot include:

1. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.

2. Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.

3. References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.

4. Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.

Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property.

This and more information about the Facebook Page updates can be found here: www.scribd.com/fullscreen/83187932 and www.facebook.com/about/pages.

Nice find by Island Collective!

Kelsey was looking for a website that would give a consistent look and feel to its two existing divisions, but still kept them as separate entities. To remedy this, we created the initial landing page that would allow the user to select their pipeline division or their trucking division. We added in a dynamic background that would run the width of most standard screen resolutions to give each page a new and fresh feeling every time a user looked at the page, even if they had already been there. When all is said and done, we have a simple website that matches Kelsey’s look and feel, and still gives the user everything they need.

Website: www.kelseypipelines.com or www.kelseytrail.com

I’d like to give a quick shout out to Chris at Saskaweb as well! They are hosting Kelsey’s domains and he was a huge help getting them sorted out during the launch! Thanks Chris!

Facebook Timeline is supposed to go live for everyone on December 22, 2011, which means we are going to have a lot of angry people out there very soon! It is available right now if you like and hopefully this prepares people for the huge changes ahead! Facebook opened it up so that users can prepare themselves before the official launch. If you activate it now you can go through your Timeline and hide what you don’t want anyone to see. Once you have that done, you can either wait until December 22, or you can publish it right now!

1) Go to http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline.

2) Across the bottom of the site, there is “Cover”, “Stories”, “Apps” and a button. Click on the “Get Timeline” button.

3) This should take you back to your Facebook profile page. If you don’t want to edit anything and want to go live, you can click on “Publish Now”.

4) If you would like to edit or remove any items on your Timeline, scroll down the to item and click on the little pencil icon.

5) Once you click on that button, you will get a drop down. You can either “Hide From Timeline” or “Delete Post…”.

There are a bunch of other options Facebook Timeline gives you, but I just wanted to talk about how to activate it for the time being! If you want a full overview, Mashable has a pretty good one that you can find here: Facebook Timeline: The Complete Guide.

Enjoy!

There have been a few people asking about the fancy little faces and images that people have been posting in Instagram, tweeting on Twitter and sending in text messages. First off, there is a prerequisite. You will need iOS5 installed on your iPhone. Still interested? Of course you are! Follow along!

1) Open “Settings” on your iPhone.

2) Go to “General”.

3) Go to “Keyboard”.

4) Go to “International Keyboards”.

5) Go to “Add New Keyboard…”.

6) Scroll down until you find “Emoji” and select it. It should appear in your list of keyboards above “Add New Keyboard…” now.

We added the Emoji keyboard to our phone, now how do we actually use it? Let’s send a text!

1) Start a new text message.

2) At the bottom of your keyboard, to the left of the “space” key, you should see a wireframe globe. Press on the globe button. This should swap your keyboard to the Emoji version!

3) When you want to get back to the regular keyboard, just press on the globe button again! Easy as that!

You can now send those fancy little emoticons in whatever applications you like! If this helped you out, be sure to share it with your friends! Enjoy!
